Official: Facebook Likes Power Bing Results

So it’s official. Bing  results will begin leveraging Facebook likes starting this Tuesday 5.17.11. It was announced back in October and now it is officially going full scale. The October announcement only appears to be a beta.

It will be extremely interesting to see what tactics Microsoft will use to get this announcement out. Will it be another $300 Million traditional (TV, Print) advertising campaign? It better be because the average user still doesn’t know about this feature. 9 out of 10 users that we ask have no idea Facebook likes are apart of the Bing results. It’s clearly a massive opportunity to leverage the Facebook brand and really make a move to take some of the search market share from the monster that is Google.

In a counter move Google announced their plus 1 feature that will appear in paid search results as well as organic. This was annouced on April 1st.

Problem with the plus 1 button is that it’s only limited to Twitter, Google Account Details, and a few other social platforms. Facebook’s social construct still remains closed to Google and thus a major problem for Google. But more on that in another post.

Here’s the announcement from AdAge on the full scale release of Facebook Likes. http://adage.com/article/digital/bing-adds-facebook-recommendations-search/227570/
